In mystic Hindu mythology, pure wool is regarded as the holiest fabric. It is believed that the most religious caste, Brahmins created them from a grass called 'kusa' for religious purposes. Sacred amulets and charms are tied with a woolen thread and black woolen thread is commonly used to keep off the evil spirits. As we come down the ages, we find that mainly those states or areas where winter stayed for a longer time produced the woolens. The rest, which experienced cold for lesser period of time, procured their woolens from the former. And that is what made the Kashmir weavers the king of shawls and other woolen weaving. They have throughout the ages made India the best producers of various varieties of shawls. Apart from Kashmir, Mandi, Kulu and Chamba of Himachal Pradesh are also great shawl producing areas.
